It protect thousands of hectares of cloud forest, paramo, deep valleys, rivers, high mountains surrounding Cerro de la Muerte and San Gerardo de Dota. The area is world famous for the sighting of the Quetzal, or Bird of Paradise, a beautiful large bird with beautiful natural green, blue and red feathers. The Quetzal is the national bird of Guatemala, and was revered by the ancient Indigenous people of Central America for the beauty of its feathers. In the area, there are several trails that lead through the forest either from high mountains to the valley of San Gerardo, or along the Rio Savegre, down the valley through cloud forests to two beautiful waterfalls. In the area there are around 5 accommodation options, from luxury boutique hotels to economic mountain lodges. This is undoubtedly a national park that many birders visit each year. It is located just 2 hours from the city of San Jose.
