Poas Volcano National Park
The Poas Volcano is one of Costa Rica`s most stunning volcanoes. This massive volcano is located in the outskirts of the Central Valley and the city of San Jose. For visiting Poas, one has to drive for around 1 hour from San Jose, reaching the maximum height of around 2850 meters above sea level, where the main park entrance and crater is located. Once you reach Poas, there is the main building, with several show rooms, teaching the visitor about what the volcano is all about, its origins, activity and other details. There also is a restaurant cafeteria and souvenir shop. From the main building, there is a wide trail leading to the main crater, a walk around 1 mile in length. At the crater, the visitor can go to the very edge of the crater, and if weather permitting, look down into the fascinating crater, considered the second largest or widest Geyser Type crater in the world, a mile wide. After the crater, the tourist can walk to the former crater, currently a crater lagoon, a fascinating natural lake located in even higher altitudes. The lagoon is totally surrounded by some of the most beautiful dense tropical cloud forests you will ever encounter. The trail has a duration of approximately 45 minutes, well worth every step. The Poas Volcano is definitely a destination we highly recommend visiting. We usually combine it with a visit to Sarchi, an artisan town around 40 miles south-west, where you will find the most colorful and typical handcrafts. Another place we can combine with Poas is the Doka Estate Coffee Tour, conveniently situated en route to the volcano.
