San Gerardo de Dota
San Gerardo de Dota is located high in the mountains of the Talamanca Mountain Range, near Cerro de la Muerte. The small community and valley are currently within the Los Quetzales National Park, named after the famous Paradise Bird, which can be best seen in this area. The area is also surrounded by endless and vast tropical cloud forests, paramo ( high altitude grassland and brush land ) in the even higher altitudes and tropical rainforests coming up from the Central and South Pacific lowlands. The cloud forests in San Gerardo are a tropical nature paradise. Evergreen valleys, ridges and canyons as far as the eye can see. The few lodges in the area have their own trails, and many enthusiastic birders visit San Gerardo every time they visit Costa Rica, in search of the Quetzal, Bell Bird and many other species, including hu8mmingbirds, trogons and other specimens. The area can also be well combined with the South Pacific , including either the Pre South Pacific ( Dominical and Uvita or Ballena ) or the far South Pacific ( Osa Peninsula, Corcovado, Drake Bay, Carate, Puerto Jimenez, Golfito and Golfo Dulce ).
