The vast Tortuguero National Park is one of Costa Rica`s oldest national parks. The park covers over 18 000 hectares of tropical lowland rainforests. Wildlife species include Jaguars, Puma, Ocelots, Sloths, three species of monkeys, reptiles, amphibians, insects and birds beyond compare. One of the most fascinating nature attractions in the area is the Green Sea Turtle nesting seasons, which starts in July and ends in August, during which time turtles nest and later, the young sea turtles hatch and go into the ocean again. Tortuguero has a small town located amidst the park boundaries, a smaller Caribbean town with local restaurants, bars, boat tours and local trips. We always take our clients for the national park boat tour, which takes people into the deep tropical forests of Tortuguero, where both land and water species can be seen. After Tortuguero, the South Caribbean destination of either Puerto Viejo, Cahuita or Manzanillo can be combined. They are located at only approximately 1 . 5 hours driving even further south. Actually, we also combine Bocas del Toro Islands in Panama a lot with Tortuguero. There are around 9 lodges in Tortuguero we work with, three located on the ocean, 6 on the canal and some are located on the secondary canal. We recommend our beachfront lodges a lot, where you hace access to both the main canal as well as to the Caribbean beach.
