Located between the Tenorio and Miravalles volcanoes at an altitude of 1,640 ft, each one of our 8 bungalows has an exceptional view towards the Tenorio volcano. Rooms are spacious, elegant, and perfectly set out for your greatest comfort.

Built on our 17 acres property, in the middle of Heliconias gardens, of fruit trees and tropical vegetation surrounding two natural ponds, the Lodge was designed to offer its guests quietness, relaxation, and serenity.

In this peaceful environment, along our trails, you will observe hundreds of birds, learn about native trees or take a dip in one of our two red cedar hot tubs.

Among the activities we suggest, you should visit the heart of the Tenorio Volcano’s National Park, the “Río Celeste”, well known for its astonishing and enchanting turquoise-blue colour.

 

THE TENORIO LODGE OFFERS YOU:

8 Spacious Bungalows of 484 square feet each comprising:

King Bed, with a 7” orthopedic mattress, mosquito net,
Table and armchairs (or a sofa bed to accommodate an additional person or two children),
Silent fan,
Fire detectors in the bedroom,
Bathroom equipped with a solar system to produce hot water,
A separate closet with space for suitcases.

One room is especially equipped for disabled persons.

To welcome you, the Main Building is composed of:

Computers with access to Internet with high speed,
A little souvenir shop,
Bar,
Restaurant, where the chef will serve you a refined and elaborate dishes prepared with fresh products from surrounding farms
Terrace with view on the Tenorio volcano.



Stop at the end of the day at the « Ranchito »:

Relax in one of the two Red Cedar wood jacuzzis.

In the middle of the garden of Heliconias, watch the twirling of hummingbirds and admire the view over the Tenorio volcano.

All constructions have a view over the Tenorio volcano.

Trails are running through our Heliconias garden, our parks, along two natural ponds and cross several reforestation zones.
Numerous places permit our visitors to observe the large number of birds that live in our great natural aviary.

 

Location

You need less than four hours driving to reach Tenorio Lodge from San Jose, capital of Costa Rica.

We are located at the limit of the provinces of Guanacaste and Alajuela, in the canton of Upala. We are at the southern entry of the locality of Bijagua, less than ninety minutes by car from Liberia‘s international airport. Count 30mn by car to join the town of Cañas or Upala in north.

From San José or from the international Juan Santa Maria Airport in Alajuela, take the Pan-American Highway towards Puntarenas and continue until Cañas. A few miles after Cañas, at the junction take a right turn on route 6 towards Upala. Just before you get to Bijagua, make a right following the indication « Tenorio Lodge ».

In this marvellous area, we have a variety of activities for all tastes, ages, and physical conditions.

We cannot show here all hikes, rides, or circuits that are possible throughout the lands; they go from one hour to several days; but we can fix whatever activities you wish. Ask us, we will know how to combine things !

Beware! You are going to discover the treasures as yet unknown, but that are worthwhile seeing from the Tenorio Lodge!

RIO CELESTE
At only 10 Miles away from Tenorio Lodge, in the Tenorio Volcano National Park, begins the trail through the forest.
After 750 yards fall of steep steps in the hillside, you will reach the famous falls of the Celeste River.

This fast-flowing stream seems to tear the green hill before to fall 65 feet lower into a basin of such a sky-blue colour that will bring out the most spontaneous expressions of wonder.

The walk continues upstream, where there are zones with boiling-water springs that smell of sulphur.
Further up, in another volcanic activity zone, numerous columns of bubbles rise from the depths of calm waters to burst in the surface.
The legend goes that the River owes its name to the fact that God, after painting the skies, cleaned his brushes in these waters.
But when you reach a place by the name of “Los Teñideros”, your guide will explain that this is the result of the chemical reaction generated by the union of the minerals present in the volcanic massif (brass and sulphur sulphates among others).
CAÑO NEGRO
At 90 minutes away from the Tenorio Lodge, around spectacular views, you will discover the amazing National Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge (24,623 acres) (pronounce cagno).
You will navigate the lagoon and the “Río Frío” aboard Don Lolo’s boat; your guide.
He will show you the site’s treasures.
The list of birds, reptiles, or mammals would be too long for this space, but you will bring from there an unforgettable souvenirs and Mega bites of pictures.
Palo VERDE NATIONAL PARK
At one hour and fifteen minutes from Tenorio Lodge, the 32.250,00 acres of Palo Verde National Park is home to 15 distinct habitats, from the mangrove to the bush and tropical dry forest. Many bird lovers come here, known for its extraordinary bird life. Located at the mouth of the River Tempisque, the park owes its name to palo verde, a tree bark green.
Its dry and wet ecosystems host clouds of waterfowl, but also crocodiles and mammals easily spotted in the sparse vegetation.
This aquatic haven attracts over 300 species of neotropical birds.
Many trails allow visitors to discover this amazing national park a few attended.
THE HANGING BRIDGES OF LAS HELICONIAS
This hike with an experienced guide, will lead you for two hours in the pre-mountainous cloud forest (2,600-3,000 ft. above see level). You will walk on three hanging bridges and will discover amazing views from the height of the canopy- A real bath of peace and a gift for the eyes.
At only a short distance from the Tenorio Lodge, on the slopes of the Tenorio Volcano you will discover the Tapir Tree (Jicaro Danto) an endemic species of the zone.
At the end of your trip, a typical lunch awaits for you at the restaurant where you will enjoy a panoramic view of the town, the Miravalles volcano, and the Lake of Nicaragua.
RIOS TROPICALES - Rafting confort. Classe I et II
Half an hour from Tenorio Lodge, enjoy an excellent and safe floating trip on the Corobicí River or on the Tenorio River.

You will have the opportunity of seeing birds and animals such as: monkeys, iguanas, crocodiles, night herons, storks, martin fishers, bats and much more.
RIOS TROPICALES - Rafting sportif. Classe III et IV
On the road to Tenorio Lodge, and if you are ready for a great adventure, this will undoubtedly be the ideal option. Located in the Heart of the Province of Guanacaste, the Tenorio River will try your talents for adventure with its incredible rapids.

For those already initiated in the world of rafting, this trip is a must. Its continuous challenges await you while you navigate in the intensity of the waters, with turns, spins, and falls (3 meters - class V).
FINCA GAVILAN
This is an ideal activity after your walk on The Heliconias hanging bridges and before returning to Tenorio Lodge.

Besides a butterfly garden, we will show you how these insects rise to export cocoons and you will come to know dozens of species of Heliconias, orchids, medicinal and aromatic plants.
LAS HORNILLAS
Las Hornillas (that comes from “horno” – oven) is located near the Miravalles Geothermal Project in « La Fortuna de Bagaces », that generates electricity thanks to the force of the master steams in the subsoil.

Las Hornillas is a 26,900 square feet crater with volcanic action: Fumaroles, boiling mud of various colours, crystallization of sulphur, hot water. A path will permit you to take a therapeutic bath and relax in a natural jacuzzi.
CANOPY VOLCAN MIRAVALLES
Within an hour fromTenorio Lodge, you are going to live another adventure. Come and enjoy the beauty of the forest viewed from above.

Feel the adrenaline up to you, you initiating a platforms on a cable through the treetops.

You will have a unique perspective to observe the trees, plants and animals. The canopy of fourteen platforms, twelve cables and a suspension bridge, you will travel a total of 1148m in safety.
