Nicoya is located in the northern province of Guanacaste. The Nicoya is a large peninsula that includes hundreds of miles of beaches, from the border with Nicaragua to the river mouth of the Tempisque River and the Palo Verde wetlands bordering Puntarenas. It is famous for its dry and warm climate, tropical savannahs and dry forests, rolling hills, large cattle ranches and haciendas, abundant beautiful beaches and many national parks and private reserves. The major cities are Santa Cruz, Nicoya and Carmona. The region is the preferred beach destinations for many tourists that now land in Liberia airport, which is close to the Peninsula.
