Lodge, Marenco and surroundings and also in
the Talamanca Mountains.

Wilson Botanical Gardens
in Las Cruces
The 80 acres of beautifully landscaped gardens,
run by the Organization for Tropical Studies,contain
one of the foremost collections of tropical
plants in the Western Hemisphere. Expert guides
lead us on a two-hour walk through the exotic
gardens, which attract many birds. Las Cruces
is 5000 feet high and has a pleasant, cool climate.
After lunch in San Vito, we visit a coffee plantation
in the Coto Brus valley.

Full-day excursion to Corcovado
National Park
The easiest way to see Costa Rica´s most famous
national park! 20-minute flight from Golfito
with chartered plane over Golfo Dulce to the
landing strip at Sirena, situated in the center
of Corcovado National Park. During the 5-hour
stay, you will have ample time to hike the well-marked
circuit trails, where you will most probably
see monkeys, scarlet macaws, and other animals.
You can buy beverages and consume your box lunch
at the ranger station of the National Park Service.
Afternoon return flight to Golfito and transfer
back to the lodge.

The Esquinas Rainforest
Adventure Tour: Riding,
Hiking, Boating, Swimming
This full day tour is for sturdy guests who
are looking for the ultimate rainforest adventure.
Assisted by one of the lodge`s experienced nature
guides. we leave the lodge on horseback and
ride up to the end of neighboring Valle Bonito.
From here, we hike through the center of the
Esquinas forest, crossing over a mountain on
a good trail before descending to Playa San
Josecito on Golfo Dulce. The 3 to 4-hour hike
takes us through primary forest never touched
by loggers, and there is a good possibility
of seeing jungle animals. After reaching the
palm-fringed beach, we have time for a picnin
and a swim in the ocean before being picked
up by a motor boat for a one-hour ride along
the beautiful coast to Golfito. A taxi awaits
us for the drive back to the lodge. Strenuous:
good physical shape and stamina is recommended.

Rio Coto mangrove tour
(Due to tide conditions, this tour is not available
all the time.)
After a drive to Golfito, we board a boat and
go south along the jungle coast. After crossing
Zancudo Bay, we go up the Rio Sabalo and turn
into a small, meandering estuary, where we can
observe egrets, herons, cormorants, pelicans,
and sometimes roseate spoonbills. After a slow
ride through the dense mangrove swamp, we enter
the wide Rio Colorado and return through a small
canal which separates Golfito Bay from the open
ocean.

Esquinas Coast and Casa Orquideas
After a drive through the jungle to Golfito,
we board a motor-boat for an excursion along
the pristine, hardly inhabited coast, where
the rainforest reaches all the way down to the
beach. Pelicans and frigate birds sit in the
trees overlooking Golfo Dulce, and there is
a good chance of seeing dolphins. After an hour,
we reach Casa Orquideas, a private botanical
garden with hundreds of species of tropical
plants, flowers, trees, shrubs and fruit. After
a guided tour, ample time remains for swimming,
and snorkeling. If the water is clear, we can
see colorful tropical reef fish. The boat brings
us back to Golfito, from where we are driven
to the lodge.

Playa Cacao Kayak Tour
From Golfito, a motor boat takes us to enchanting,
palm-fringed Playa Cacao, where we begin kayaking
along the pristine, steep coast. The waters
of Golfo Dulce are calm in the morning, and
a large variety of waterbirds can be seen. The
rainforest reaches all the way down to the many
uninhabited coves and bays, where we have the
opportunity to disembark for swimming and snorkeling.
The motor boat follows at a discreet distance,
ready to pick us up after around 3 hours (or
when we give a sign)

El Chorro Waterfall (Guided
Horseback Ride and Hike)
We ride our horses through the village of La
Gamba (4 Km.) and hike to the Chorro Waterfall
(30 Min.), under which we can swim in a deep,
crystal clear pool. The courageous can continue
canyoning up the riverbed, climbing over small
waterfalls until they reach a large waterfall
with a natural lake in the middle of the rainforest.
The same excursion can be done with mountain
bikes.

Quebrada Gamba (Guided Mountain Bike Tour and Hike)
We ride our
mountain bikes towards Golfito.
After around 1 hour we enter the Quebrada Gamba
for a trailless riverbed hike which leads to a beautiful
jungle waterfall. After a refreshing dip in the
natural pool, we descend to the valley for the ride
back to the lodge. The same excursion can be done
on horse back. Alternative in case of bad weather:
Valle Bonito.

Sendero Catarata-Heliconia-Fila-Ocelote
A well-marked but steep and muddy trail leading
to a picturesque waterfall and up countless steps
and switchbacks to an area of pristine primary
forest, with buttress and stilt roots, lianas
of immense length, light gaps, and many high,
old trees. We walk along the ridge (=Fila), where
we might get to see monkeys or other animals,
before descending steeply down the Ocelot Trail
to the lodge. The trail is easy to follow, but
it climbs more almost 1000 feet and is steep and
muddy at places.
Walking time: 2 1/2 - 3 hours.

Sendero Pajaro
An easy,
level trail of less than 1 mile leading through
a beautiful secondary-growth rainforest, with
numerous species of tree ferns, palms, heliconias,
and bromeliads, as well as lizards, frogs, leaf-cutter
ants and countless other reptiles and insects.
After crossing a stream and passing through the
lodge's fruit and vegetable garden, the trail
leads around the Cayman pond and back through
the garden of ornamental trees and plants. Specially
recommended for birdwatchers. Walking time: 45
- 60 minutes.
